By FUMEI · · 4 min read

Factory spec sheets, test reports, import documents and OEM contracts each have their own vocabulary. This glossary explains the terms buyers meet most often when sourcing electric and pneumatic standing desks. Terms are grouped by topic. Links go to our longer guides.

Frame and drive

TermMeaning
FrameLegs, feet, crossbar, motors, control box and handset, without the desktop
Column (lifting column, leg)The telescoping leg that moves the desk up and down
StageOne telescoping tube section of a column. 2-stage columns have two sections, 3-stage have three, giving more travel
Inverted columnColumn mounted with the narrowest tube at the bottom and widest at the top
CrossbarThe horizontal beam between the legs that holds the frame square
Width-adjustable frameA frame whose crossbar telescopes to fit several desktop widths
Single motorOne motor drives both legs through a transmission rod. See single vs dual motor
Dual motorOne motor in each leg, synchronised by the control box
Four-motor frameFrame for two-user benching with two motors per side
Transmission rod (hex shaft)Shaft linking the motor leg to the second leg on single-motor frames
Spindle (lead screw)Threaded rod inside the column that turns motor rotation into lift
Control boxElectronics that power, synchronise and protect the motors
Handset (hand controller)Buttons or touch panel used to raise, lower and store positions
Memory presetStored heights recalled with one button
Pneumatic (gas spring) deskDesk lifted by a gas spring, released by a lever; no power needed
Crank deskDesk raised by a manual crank handle

Performance and safety

TermMeaning

Work surface heightFloor to the top of the desktop, used in EN 527-1
Height rangeLowest to highest position; check whether it is frame or work surface height
Rated loadThe load the manufacturer states the desk can lift
Lifting speedTravel per second, usually in mm/s
Duty cycleRatio of running time to rest time a motor is designed for
Anti-collisionFunction that stops or reverses the desk when it meets an obstacle
Overload protectionFunction that stops the drive when the load exceeds a limit
Overheat protectionFunction that pauses the drive when motors or electronics get too hot
Child lockHandset lock that prevents unintended movement
Wobble (lateral stability)Side-to-side movement at standing height, affected by columns, crossbar, feet and top
Noise levelSound during movement in dB; check how and at what distance it was measured
Standby powerPower drawn by the control box when the desk is not moving

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between frame height and desk height?

Frame height excludes the desktop; work surface height includes it. Add the desktop thickness to frame height to compare with standards like EN 527-1.

What does 3-stage mean on a standing desk?

Each column has three telescoping sections, which usually gives a wider height range than a 2-stage column.

What is a golden sample?

The approved sample that production is compared with during inspection. Keep one at your office and one at the factory.

What does AQL mean in desk inspections?

Acceptance quality limit, the sampling plan used to decide whether a production lot passes inspection under ISO 2859-1.
