Standing Desk Frames vs Complete Desks: What B2B Buyers Should Import
Many buyers import only the electric frame (legs, motors, control box and handset) and fit desktops at home. Others buy the complete desk, packed and ready to assemble. Neither option is better in every case. The right choice depends on freight, local board supply, product rules and how much assembly you can manage.
Short answer: import frames when you have a reliable local desktop supplier, need many top sizes or finishes, or want desktops to meet local emission and wood-origin rules. Buy complete desks when you want one supplier responsible for fit, one carton per desk and a simpler launch.
Side-by-side comparison
| Factor | Frame only | Complete desk |
|---|---|---|
| Freight volume | Frames pack compactly; tops add bulk and weight | Top in the same shipment, more volume per unit |
| Damage risk in transit | Fewer large flat panels to protect | Higher for tops; packaging matters |
| Desktop choice | Any local size, material or finish | Limited to what the factory offers |
| Product rules for wood | Local board supplier handles formaldehyde and wood-origin paperwork | Importer needs data from the factory for the board |
| Fit responsibility | You check hole pattern, screw length and top stiffness | Factory supplies a matched set |
| Customs classification | Can differ from complete desks; confirm with your broker | Usually classified as furniture |
| Assembly | Top must be drilled or pre-drilled to match | Pre-drilled top, one carton set |
| Best for | Dealers with local joinery, fit-out contractors, brands with many finishes | E-commerce sellers, corporate rollouts, first orders |
When frames make sense
- Many finishes or sizes. Corporate fit-outs often match desk tops to the rest of the furniture. A local board supplier can do short runs.
- Desktop compliance. In the EU, the REACH formaldehyde limit for furniture applies from 6 August 2026. EUDR covers many wood panels. In the US, EPA TSCA Title VI covers composite wood. Sourcing boards locally can simplify that work. See our EU and UK and USA import guides.
- Freight economics. Boards are heavy and bulky. Moving them across an ocean costs container space.
When complete desks make sense
- One responsible supplier. If the top cracks at the mounting screws or the frame doesn't fit, there is one party to fix it.
- Retail and e-commerce. Customers expect one box set with everything matched and pre-drilled.
- Launch speed. No need to qualify a second supplier before your first shipment.

Frequently asked questions
Is it cheaper to import standing desk frames only?
It can lower freight volume per unit, but total cost depends on local desktop prices, assembly labour and damage rates. Compare the landed cost of both options for your market.
What desktop thickness works with an electric frame?
It depends on the frame and screw length. Ask the factory for minimum top dimensions and thickness for the frame you buy. Test a sample before ordering in volume.
Do frame-only imports avoid wood regulations?
The frame itself is mostly steel and electronics, but the finished desk you sell must still meet local rules. That includes formaldehyde limits for the top.
Key terms
